Nha Trang to Moc Bai: bus, train, flight or private car

Moc Bai sits in Tay Ninh province, on the Cambodian side of the road to Phnom Penh. From Nha Trang it is roughly 500 km. How you cover those kilometres changes everything about the day: the public bus chain and the train both route you through Ho Chi Minh City first, which means a night in Saigon or a very long wait in a bus station. A charter car skips the connections but costs more per head than flying in some cases. And the visa-run convoy drives the inland route directly, so the whole thing fits inside one day.

Here is each option with real 2026 numbers, followed by the one comparison that matters: how many hours of your life it eats.

There is no direct Nha Trang to Moc Bai bus. Nobody sells one ticket that gets you from the coast to the border gate. What exists is a chain of two or three buses, and you assemble it yourself.

Leg one is Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City. Sleeper buses on that run take 10 to 13 hours and cost roughly 200,000 to 700,000 VND depending on the operator and the class of bunk. Companies on the route include Lien Hung, Phuc An, Futabus, Hanh Cafe, and Hoang Long. They leave from several stations around Nha Trang, not from one central terminal, so you need to get yourself to the right one.

Leg two is Saigon to Moc Bai border gate. Buses and shared vans cover it in about 2 to 2.5 hours, with fares from roughly 120,000 to 550,000 VND. Some drop you at the border gate itself, some at a bus station in Tay Ninh town where you take a motorbike or taxi the last stretch.

Add it up and you are looking at 13 to 16 hours of travel before you have crossed anything, plus a night in Saigon if you want to arrive at the border rested rather than wrecked. Then you do the Cambodian side, turn around, and repeat the whole chain back. Budget two days and a hotel.

Vietnam Railways runs the Nha Trang to Saigon leg over 411 km of single track. It is the most comfortable way to reach the city, and it still does not get you to the border.

• SE3 departs 21:12, arrives 05:30. 8h18m.
• SE21 departs 19:38, arrives 04:35. 8h57m.

• SE5 departs 10:25, arrives 18:20. 7h55m, daytime.
• SE7 departs 08:47, arrives 17:00. 8h13m, daytime.

Soft seats start around 295,000 to 390,000 VND. Four-berth soft sleepers run roughly 41 to 57 USD, and the private tourist carriages (Violette, Charmy, Halo) sit higher again at 55 to 62 USD.

The problem is what happens at 05:30. You step off at Saigon station, and Moc Bai is still 2 to 2.5 hours away by road. So the train buys you comfort on leg one and hands you the same leg two as the bus chain, minus the sleep you were counting on.

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) handles the Nha Trang area and sits south of the city on the bay, about 35 km from the centre. Two different flight strategies get used by runners here, and they are not the same trip.

Fly to Saigon, then go overland. CXR to Ho Chi Minh City takes about 1 hour 10 minutes in the air. That is the fast part. You then land at Tan Son Nhat, cross the city, and still need the 2 to 2.5 hour ride to Moc Bai. Add airport time at both ends and the flight saves you maybe three hours against the train, for considerably more money. Worth it if you are on a clock; not worth it if you are counting dong.

Fly out of the country entirely. This is the airport run: CXR to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Singapore, a night in a third country, then a flight back into Vietnam on a fresh entry. It resets your clock without touching a land border, and some carriers run direct services from Cam Ranh. The catch is cost. Return fares plus a hotel night plus airport transfers usually land well above the 5M VND Standard land bundle, and you need to be sure the entry stamp you get on return matches what you actually need.

For comparison purposes: a Danang visa operator publishes a city comparison arguing that Nha Trang is awkwardly placed for land runs and suggests flight-outs as the alternative. That is a real trade-off, and the numbers above show why it is not a cheap one.

Hiring a car and driver for the whole trip is the option most people land on after the bus chain disappoints them. It removes the connections, the station transfers, and the guesswork.

On the open market, a private transfer from Nha Trang toward Ho Chi Minh City runs roughly 170 to 350 USD per car depending on vehicle and operator, and takes 5 to 7 hours. That is the city leg only. If you want the driver to continue to Moc Bai and wait while you cross, you are negotiating a full-day or two-day charter, and most operators price that separately.

The honest limit of a charter: it is still a car on a road. It does not make the loop shorter than it is, and it does not get you back to Nha Trang before the evening. What it does is take away every decision between your hotel door and the border.

Every option above sends you through Ho Chi Minh City. The convoy does not. It runs inland instead: out of Nha Trang on QL27C, over Khanh Le Pass, then north-west through the highlands on QL14 and down into Tay Ninh province. About 500 km each way, 5 to 7 hours of driving per direction.

The shape of the day: pickups start around 02:30 to 03:00 in the city and sweep through An Vien, Vinh Hoa, Cam Lam, and the Cam Ranh Bay resorts by 05:00. You reach Moc Bai between 10:00 and 12:00. The fixer queues the passports, you cross into Bavet, and you come back with a fresh stamp. Drop-offs start in Cam Ranh around 19:00 and finish in Nha Trang between 20:00 and 21:00. Sixteen hours door to door, one day, no hotel.

Pricing is 1.5M VND for a shared sleeper seat, transport only. The 5M Standard bundle adds the Cambodia visa at the Bavet counter (1.1M if bought separately) and the 90-day Vietnam e-visa desk work (2.4M on its own). The Premium private car is 6M VND, or 9.5M with both visas included.

What you give up compared with the train: reclining seats and a dining car. What you get: the border crossed and home the same night, which is the only reason anyone makes this trip.

Which one fits depends on the trip you are actually making. Going to Saigon anyway? Take the train and enjoy it. Only need the stamp and nothing else? The convoy is the only option that finishes in a day. Are you flying out to Bangkok for a week? That is a holiday with a visa reset attached, not a visa run.
