Visa Run or Visa Extension in Nha Trang: The 2026 Decision

Search for "extend my Vietnam visa" and you will find agency pages selling something that, for most travelers, no longer exists. Under the current rules, a 90-day e-visa is issued for a set period and cannot be extended or renewed from inside Vietnam. The same is true of the 45-day visa-exemption stamp that many Western passports get on arrival: it runs its course, and nobody stamps it longer.

In Nha Trang that leaves three real paths when your stay is running down. You do a visa run to the Moc Bai border and come back the same day with a fresh 90-day e-visa, starting at 1.5 million VND for transport only. You qualify for a Temporary Residence Card through work, investment, marriage or study, which takes weeks to arrange but ends the run habit for years. Or you overstay, and deal with daily fines and the chance of an exit ban. That third one is not a strategy.

For long-stay foreigners, the only in-country renewal that exists is the Temporary Residence Card, usually called a TRC. It is not a stamp on your visa. You qualify through one of four routes: a work permit with a Vietnamese employer or a foreign company operating in Vietnam (the LD route), investment in a registered Vietnamese company (DT), marriage to a Vietnamese citizen (TT), or full-time enrollment at an accredited university (DH). The application runs through your sponsor or an immigration agency, and the government fee lands in the ballpark of 145 to 295 USD for the term, with agency service fees on top for anyone who does not want to assemble the file themselves.

Two realities matter in 2026. First, immigration now expects TRC applicants to be holding a work or family visa, not a tourist e-visa, so someone who arrived as a visitor often converts their visa first, which adds a couple of weeks. Second, a TRC is tied to the basis it was granted on. Lose the job or the marriage and the card can be cancelled, and when it expires you file a fresh application rather than rolling it over.

A visa run from Nha Trang is one long day. Pickup runs from about 03:00 to 05:00 across the city center on Tran Phu, plus Vinh Hai, An Vien, Cam Lam and the Cam Ranh Bay resorts. The convoy climbs over Khanh Le Pass on QL27C, crosses the highlands through Dak Nong and Binh Phuoc, and reaches Moc Bai on the Cambodian border between 10:00 and 12:00, roughly 500 km from where it started.

Three price points cover most people. Transportation only is 1.5 million VND, about 60 USD, and it is the right call when you already hold a valid visa or exemption and just need the exit stamp. The Standard bundle at 5 million VND, about 200 USD, adds door pickup, the fixer escort, the Cambodia visa and the new 90-day e-visa. The Premium private car at 9.5 million VND, about 380 USD, runs the same day on your own schedule with one checked bag each. E-visa processing tiers run from 65 USD at four days up to 165 USD for a one-hour rush, single entry, and rush tiers only operate Monday to Friday.

A third option deserves a mention: flying out to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore for the night and coming back on a fresh visa. It works, it is a pleasant break, and it costs more in airfare and a hotel than the land run. Most people compare it once and settle on Moc Bai because the border day is one fixed price with pickup from your door.

Staying under six months, no job lined up. Do the run. If you still hold a valid visa or exemption, book Transportation only at 1.5 million VND. If your status expires with the stay, the 5 million VND Standard bundle is the complete fix: both visas, fixer, door pickup, done in a day.

Arrived visa-exempt on a 45-day stamp. Run around day 35 to 40 and re-enter on the same visa-free arrangement. Pick a departure that suits you; runs leave every day of the year, Tet included, and you confirm your pickup by 20:00 the night before.

Planning to stay for years as a remote worker without local ties. Be honest about the math. Four Standard runs a year lands around 20 million VND, roughly 800 USD, and after a few cycles border officers start asking why you keep coming back. If a TRC route is open to you, take it. If it is not, budget for the runs and keep every stay inside its stamp.

The one decision to never make is the overstay while paperwork or indecision drags on. Book the run first, sort the paperwork second. A day at Moc Bai is cheaper than a fine and cheaper still than an exit ban.

Overstay. Vietnam fines overstayers by the day and reserves the right to ban repeat or long overstayers from re-entry. The worst place to discover the fine is at a border counter with your bags packed. There is no legal reason to test it: a run fixes the clock before expiry and a rush e-visa tier fixes it after, within limits.

Run frequency. There is no official cap on how often you can exit and re-enter, but immigration officers keep discretion, and a pattern of back-to-back runs with no other ties to Vietnam can draw questions. Runs as a lifestyle work for a year or two. For a decade, that is what the TRC exists for.

TRC strings. The card belongs to your situation, not to you. A rejected file, a sponsor who stops cooperating, or a job change that breaks the eligibility chain can all stall a renewal, and immigration can cancel the card if its basis ends. Start renewals a month out, not a week.

Passport basics. Both paths assume six-plus months of validity and two blank pages.
